๐ฃ How to Fish Rod Guide - Every Rod Explained
Most islands only need the standard Fishing Rod โ the Crab Fishing Rod matters on the Lighthouse and for one Forest exception. This guide explains each rod, where it applies and when an upgrade changes what bites.
Quick Answer: Which Rod Do You Need?
Almost every island only needs the standard Fishing Rod. The Crab Fishing Rod matters on the Lighthouse and for exactly one Forest exception โ the Piranha, which requires it together with a Hot Dog. Bait tier, not rod tier, decides what bites from Island 2 onward.
| Rod | Where it applies |
|---|---|
| Crab Fishing Rod | All Lighthouse fishing; on Island 2 only the Piranha (with a Hot Dog) |
| Fishing Rod (standard) | All regular fishing on Islands 2-5 โ bait grade does the heavy lifting |
Crab Fishing Rod
The starter rod of the Lighthouse island. Every creature there โ Rock Crab, Shrimp, Lobster โ is caught with it, using the Free Lure or a Hot Dog. It stays relevant on Island 2 for a single exception: the Piranha bites only with a Hot Dog fished using the Crab Fishing Rod, the one mixed-rod case in the game.
Fishing Rod (Standard)
Purchased cheaply (about $3 for the basic rod) and used for all regular fishing from Island 2 to the Volcano. What each island's water yields is decided by the bait tier you pair with it, so upgrading lures โ not rods โ is how you reach higher-value fish.
- Island 2 (Forest): Free Lure or Beginner Lure (plus the Piranha exception above).
- Island 3 (Desert): Standard Lure only โ one bait covers the whole island.
- Island 4 (Rocky): Professional Lure.
- Island 5 (Volcano): Scientific Lure.
Rod In, Fish Not Biting? (It Is the Input, Not the Rod)
A verified Island 2 quirk: after the new rod is submerged you must press and hold the left mouse button to reel โ tapping does nothing. If holding still fails, re-check the bait tier against the island and your co-op partner's interaction state.
๐ก Community wiki: hold left click after casting the new rod, then verify bait tier โ the two most common "fish won't bite" causes on Island 2.
Bosses Ignore Rod Rules
Bosses do not follow the island x bait-tier table at all. Each boss needs its own special bait: the Empty Beer Can for the Spider Crab, the Modified Leech for the Giant Piranha, the Carrot for the Pufferfish, a placed Tuna for the Albatross, and the Fish Bucket for the Bowhead Whale. The rod choice matters far less than having the right boss bait.
