⏱️ Your First Hour in How to Fish
A step-by-step plan for your first hour in How to Fish: clams for the Keeper, the $3 rod, the knife and anvil, your first catches — and the Spider Crab fight that unlocks the ship.
Quick Answer: The First-Hour Plan
Spend the first hour on the Lighthouse island: feed a clam to the Lighthouse Keeper for starting cash, buy the Basic Fishing Rod ($3) and the Free Lure, catch and sell common creatures until you can afford the Knife, grind the Knife on the anvil to push its damage to 20, then buy a Beer Can for the Keeper — the Empty Beer Can he hands back is the bait that summons the first boss, the Spider Crab. Beat it, feed the meat to the Keeper, and you walk away with the Ship Key; buy the Radar ($10) and its green mark points you at the second island.
💡 Talk to the Keeper before anything else — his dialogue is the tutorial.
What You Need
Nothing but starter cash — every item below is bought on the Lighthouse island, and the whole list costs only a few dollars of in-game money.
- Basic Fishing Rod ($3) — your first rod
- Free Lure — catches the low-value creatures you grind on
- Knife (or Brass Knuckles) — your first weapon; grind it on the Anvil at the lighthouse entrance to raise damage to 20
- Hot Dog Lure ($1) — attracts larger creatures once basics are comfortable
- Beer Can — buy one and feed it to the Keeper; he returns the Empty Beer Can (boss bait)
Step by Step: The Opening Hour
The sequence below is the community-documented Lighthouse route. Steps 1-5 are the earning phase, 6-8 the boss, 9 the payoff.
- 1. Talk to the Lighthouse Keeper — he teaches the basics
- 2. Pick up the Clams on the ground; eat one to fill your stomach, then throw one to the Keeper for your initial cash
- 3. Buy the Basic Fishing Rod ($3) and catch low-value creatures with the Free Lure
- 4. Buy the Knife (or Brass Knuckles) and grind it on the Anvil at the lighthouse entrance — damage goes up to 20
- 5. Buy the Hot Dog Lure ($1) and start catching larger creatures
- 6. Buy a Beer Can, feed it to the Keeper, and he returns an Empty Beer Can
- 7. Use the Empty Beer Can as bait to summon the Spider Crab — the first boss
- 8. Kill it and feed the meat to the Keeper → you receive the Ship Key
- 9. Buy the Radar ($10) and equip it — a green mark to the northwest points at the Forest island
💡 Rock Crab, Shrimp and Lobster are the collectible crustaceans on this island — the Free Lure and Hot Dog Lure catch them.
Learn the Rhythm Before the Boss
The first hour is where the pull-and-fight rhythm of fishing clicks, and it is worth practicing on cheap catches rather than in a boss fight. Accept the island's tasks first so every capture has a goal, keep selling regular catches to build a cash buffer, and only then spend on the boss bait chain. Do not rush to use boss bait the moment you can afford it — the Spider Crab is a gear check, and an un-ground Knife makes it slow.
- Weaken a creature, finish it with a deliberate kill — you are training the muscle you will later use for killscore multipliers
- Sell the ordinary meat freely; only hold back anything a task or NPC explicitly asks for
- Keep bag space free before summoning the boss — you need room for its drop
The Spider Crab Fight
The Empty Beer Can summons the Spider Crab, and the fight is a short dance rather than a slugfest:
- Stay close so it commits to its charge, then step aside and dodge
- Punish with 2-4 hits while it is stunned
- Do not pull too far away — it jumps and resets the pattern
- Watch the white escape bar under its health bar: if it times out, the boss escapes and you start over
First-Hour Tips
- The shop can wait: this island only asks for the rod, the knife and the boss bait chain — hold your cash so the $10 Radar lands the moment the Ship Key does
- The Radar ($10) is the first purchase after the boat — it is the key to unlocking new islands
- Check for a task before selling or eating any unusual drop — heads, fins, tails and skeletons are usually hand-in items
- Upgrade when you reach a new island or when things get tough, not on a schedule
Common First-Hour Mistakes
- Selling or eating the boss drop — the Keeper wants it, and it is worth more than money
- Buying decorative or broad upgrades before the boss fight, then lacking damage funds
- Fighting the Spider Crab in the open with no terrain to break its charge
- Treating meat and trophy parts as interchangeable — special-shaped parts are mostly task items
💡 Once the Radar is on the boat, the Walkthrough & Progression guide takes over — island by island, boss by boss.
