What is the How to Fish game?

How to Fish is a physics-driven fishing game with guns by Dazed Games, released on Steam on August 20, 2026 for $7.99 β€” you drink, sail, crash into an island, and fish your way home. The core loop is fish, kill, sell, buy better gear, beat the boss, unlock the next island. It sold over one million copies in its first two days and sits at Overwhelmingly Positive on Steam.

How do I start How to Fish?

Talk to the island NPCs before wandering off, so every catch has a quest behind it and you are not re-crossing the map. Practice the pull-and-fight rhythm on common fish first, sell your catches to build a small cash buffer, and spend it on one good loadout plus a better engine instead of buying everything you see β€” firepower before ships (see /guides/beginner-guide).

How do I unlock the next island?

Kill the island boss, then hand its special loot β€” a skeleton, fin, head or trophy β€” to the right NPC; only after the delivery does the radar show the next island. Killing the boss alone is not enough, and quest items must never be sold or cooked. To leave the starter Lighthouse, finish the Spider Crab task for the boat key, buy and equip the $10 radar, then follow the green dot northwest (see /islands/island-order).

Where can I find a specific fish or creature?

Your lure and rod decide what you catch: the lure sets the catch pool, and some creatures also need a specific rod β€” crabs, shrimp, lobsters and piranhas take the Crab Fishing Rod. A creature's "best island" is a high-probability recommendation, not a map lock, so the correct lure plus the correct rod matters more than where you cast. The full per-creature table lives in our fish locations list (see /fish).

How do I beat bosses?

Follow the loop that works on every boss: finish the local quest to get the boss's special bait, cast it to lure the boss in, dodge its telegraphed attacks (charges, runs, rolls), and deal your damage in the window right after each hard hit. Watch the white patience bar under the health bar β€” if it empties, the boss flees and the bait is wasted β€” and eat before long fights like the Giant Piranha. Keep the trophy after the kill for the NPC delivery (see /bosses).

Which bait or rod should I use?

Ordinary lures are bought in the store and determine which creatures bite; boss baits are quest rewards that cannot be bought β€” for example, only the Modified Leech summons the Giant Piranha, assembled from 3 leeches picked up off the forest ground. Match the rod to the target as well: shellfish-type creatures need the Crab Fishing Rod (see /equipment).
