The Yellow Boxfish is documented as an Island 3 (Desert) creature. As with every regular creature in How to Fish, the listed island is the recommended high-probability area rather than a hard map lock — the lure is what decides the catch pool.

Equip the regular Fishing Rod and bait a Standard Lure. The Yellow Boxfish sits in the same Standard Lure pool as the Salmon, Catfish, Clownfish, Needlefish, Bluegill, Seahorse, Bowlfish, Sea Urchin and Angelfish.

Some guides call this creature "Boxfish" while the latest AllThings.How lure table (2026-08-26) calls it "Yellow Boxfish". Both names refer to the same Island 3 creature; this site uses the AllThings.How spelling and keeps "Boxfish" as the short alias (hence the /fish/boxfish URL).

The Yellow Boxfish has a rare Drip variant like every other creature in the game. The tell is the name rendering in rainbow text instead of white — the same Standard Lure and Fishing Rod that catch the common version catch the Drip version, from the same Island 3 pool. Community reports peg the Drip chance for regular creatures at around 10% (unofficial). Two rules make the hunt count: the Drip creature must be killed, not just reeled in, and Drip entries fill the Fishipedia achievement while the common version fills Collector — the two tracks never overlap.

The Yellow Boxfish arrives mid-story: Island 3 (Desert) opens after the Giant Piranha fight on Island 2 — hand the skeleton to the lady by the lake and the coordinates appear. From that point the Standard Lure tier becomes your everyday workhorse bait, and the Yellow Boxfish is simply one of the ten regulars you will reel in repeatedly while fishing the Desert. That makes it a low-effort entry for both collection tracks: the common version counts toward Collector, and every rainbow-named surprise along the way counts toward Fishipedia.
